Filmska priča oživljava mit iz Paolinijevog romana u kom su jahači zmajeva obezbeđivali mir i prosperitet Alageziji. Zmajevi su svojim jahačima davali magične moći, pa čak i besmrtnost. Nijedan neprijatelj nije mogao da ih porazi - dok jedan od njih, Galbatoriks, nije odlučio da svu moć uzme za sebe i rasformira jahače. S Eragonovim otkrićem svetlucavog safirnog jajeta, iz kojeg se izleže zmaj kojem on daje ime Safira, vreme jahača zmajeva ponovo dolazi. Otkrivši da je predodređen za jahača zmaja, Eragon je, uz pomoć mentora Broma, odlučan da povrati zlatno doba pravde. Ali, da bi ostvario svoje planove on će morati da izbegne sve smicalice kralja Galbatoriksa. Zato se Eragon, poslednja uzdanica za stanovnike Alagezije, upušta u svet magije i moći i postaje pravi heroj...
